Vincenzo Ventapane
Violin maker
(c. 1730 – c. 1800)
Vincenzo Ventapane was the presumed uncle of Lorenzo Ventapane. He was a pupil of Antonio and Raffaele Gagliano. He was possibly the best craftsman in the family, though he was also the least prolific. His work was not remarkably fine. He utilized the Amati form, featuring a well-regulated outline with elegant 'c' bouts and long corners. The modeling was broad and flat. The soundholes were well disposed and neatly cut, generally with pointed 'pike head' shaped lower wings. He applied a golden-orange or yellow-brown varnish over a flat polished ground. A good original example is in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna.
