Louis Socquet
Violin maker
(c. 1730 – c. 1780)
Louis Socquet was born in Mirecourt. He established himself in Paris at the sign 'Au Genie de l'Harmonie', Place du Vieux Louvre. He served as a luthier for the orchestra of the Academie Royale de Musique. His work was very inconsistent. His early period reflected the 'vieux Paris' style, characterized by Amatisé form with medium arch and good golden-brown varnish. From around 1770, his later work was undoubtedly commercial, sourced from Mirecourt, and lacked individuality and care. It featured plain materials and dark, meager varnish. He also provided violas, small cellos, and viols of various forms. His instruments were branded on the back button.
