William Moennig I
Violin maker
(1883 – 1962)
William Moennig apprenticed to his uncle Adolf in Budapest, Hungary. He moved to the USA in 1896 to study with his brother-in-law Julius Guetter in Philadelphia. His first instrument was completed in 1904. He established himself independently at 'Ye olde Fiddle Shop' in 1909. Approximately 200 instruments were made by him, including six cellos and one double bass. He used his own oil varnish and created Stradivari and Guarneri models.
