Charles Gaillard
Violin maker
(fl. 1851 – 1880)
Charles Gaillard was a violin and bow maker, the son of Louis Gaillard. He was the first apprentice of C.A. Gand in Paris before establishing his own shop, initially in the Faubourg Poissonnière and later at 20 rue Notre-Dame de Rouvrance from 1865. Gaillard produced fine work in the Gand style, with some instruments modeled on Guarneri. His varnishing typically featured a thin textured orange-brown color without shading or artificial aging. Notable small violas had a back length of 39 cm (15 3/8"). His bows were branded: GAILLARD PARIS, and his printed violin labels read: Charles Gaillard / Rue Poissonnière, 15. Paris 1851 and Charles Gaillard / No. 20 Rue Notre-Dame-de-Recouurance No. 20 / Paris 1865.
