Premysl Otakar Spidlen
Violin maker
(1920 – 2010)
Premysl Otakar Spidlen, son and pupil of Otakar Spidlen, was a highly influential maker of the 20th century, known for his immaculate workmanship and dedication to replicating the work of Stradivari and Guarneri. He was significantly influenced by contemporary theories of plate tuning and acoustical manipulation, contributing greatly through his own research and experience. Over his career, he completed more than 250 violins, violas, and cellos, using the finest materials and a rich shaded golden-red varnish that was lightly and sensitively aged. His accolades include medals awarded at the Hague in 1947, Liege in 1960, and Poznan in 1962 and 1967. He was also a respected expert in old violins and a founding member of the Violin-Makers' Artists' Circle. He was succeeded by his son Jan (b. 1967)
