Johann Georg Stauffer was a guitar and violin maker. He was a pupil of F. Geissenhof and succeeded to the business of I. Barth. He established himself at 448 Schulhof, later moving to 460 Setzerhof and then to 1064 Plankengasse from 1822 to 1824. He relocated again to 1111 Neubergergasse and returned to Schulhof at no. 415 in 1825. In 1828, he moved to 480 Rotenturm and established himself in Schuldenarrest ...Read More after 1833. Around 1841, he was active in Kosice, Slovakia, and some instruments were labelled from 'Casehaii, ' its Latinised form. His violin family of instruments was very craftsmanlike but faced criticism for being mechanical and inconsistent. He produced very neat work on Cremonese and occasional Brescian models, although copies of Stainer and Bergonzi were reportedly among his output. Some experimental instruments featured unorthodox construction and patterns. The varnish varied significantly; the most common impression was of a very hard, glossy, and lifeless spirit recipe, though some had softer and more attractive coatings. Many productions included shaded and aged finishes. He created Maggini models with intricate purfling decoration and some carved lion's heads. Scrolls were usually accurately cut and well finished. A 'patent' cornerless violin derived from Chanot was also recorded. He designed the arpeggione in 1833, a fretted small six-stringed cello for which Schubert wrote the celebrated Arpeggione Sonata.
