Johann Scheverle

Johann Scheverle was born in Augsburg, Germany. His name was rendered in various ways: Schaferle, Schefferle, Schwertle, and Schewerle. He was a virtuoso lutenist who studied instrument making with J. Hellmer in Prague and worked with T. Edlingera. He became a citizen of Prague in 1731. There were few violins, and one cello was cited by Vannes. His instruments featured a Klotz/Amati model with a medium arch, relatively large Stradivarian soundholes, and a nicely concentric scroll with a large throat. The varnish was a good red-brown.
