James Reynold Carlisle
Violin maker
(1886 – 1962)
James Reynold Carlisle worked in Charleston from 1900 to 1914, focusing on varnish development and creating a dark red formula known as 'Italian sunshine varnish.' He subsequently joined Wurlitzer in Cincinnati, where he collaborated with A. W. Beach in selling commercial instruments that featured this varnish. The Stradivari model was used, while the Guarneri pattern was adopted after 1940. Production continued even after Carlisle's retirement, with approximately 500 instruments carrying his label, of which around 75 were of fine handmade quality. These included either early work with a manuscript label or later pieces identified by a thumbprint on the left side of the label. Carlisle also helped to train Rembert Wurlitzer during his time at the firm in the 1920s
