James Reynold Carlisle worked in Charleston from 1900 to 1914, focusing on varnish development and creating a dark red formula known as 'Italian sunshine varnish.' He subsequently joined Wurlitzer in Cincinnati, where he collaborated with A. W. Beach in selling commercial instruments that featured this varnish.
