33: A VIOLA BY ROMEO ANTONIAZZI, MILAN, 1912 ‡

Labeled, "Antoniazzi Romeo Cremonese fece a Cremona l'anno 1912." Signed to the label.

LOB: 39.8 cm

This viola by Romeo Antoniazzi is a fine and characteristic example of the maker’s work. Romeo is the youngest member of the Antoniazzi family, and now a well-regarded name among both collectors and musicians. Romeo played an important role in the Italian violin-making industry of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He worked both independently and for prominent firms and makers, including Monzino & Sons and Leandro Bisiach. This viola represents his finer output, featuring a rich, plentiful varnish and presenting in an excellent state of preservation, making it an appealing instrument for players and collectors alike.
