This viola by Giuseppe Lucci, made in Rome in 1975, is a characteristic example of the work of one of the most prolific Italian makers of the post-war period. A pupil of Pietro Borghi and Leandro Bisiach, Lucci combined strong technical training with an energetic and highly productive career, making over 700 instruments.

His work was widely recognized during his lifetime, earning medals in numerous competitions and establishing his reputation among both musicians and collectors. Lucci’s instruments are also notable for their distinctive branding: they are typically marked internally and beneath the endpin with an emblem depicting two fish. This motif is a play on his name—“luccio” in Italian meaning pike—rendered here as a pair of stylized pike.

This example reflects the clarity, consistency, and craftsmanship that define Lucci’s output, offering a reliable and well-made instrument from a maker whose work remains widely appreciated today.
