152:

A VIOLIN BY PIERRE PACHEREL, NICE, c. 1850

152: A VIOLIN BY PIERRE PACHEREL, NICE, c. 1850

Unlabeled.

Stamped to the inside back, "Pacherel a Nice."

LOB: 35.4 cm

Although lots 152 and 153 are both by Pierre Pacherel, they reflect different periods and stylistic tendencies within the maker’s output. Compared to other makers of the mid 19th century, Pacherel’s work varies considerably in both style and execution. His earlier instruments clearly reflect the influence of Pressenda, whereas his later work appears more individual. It is also evident that other hands were involved at times in his production.

This violin is strongly inspired by Pressenda in its model, arching, and workmanship. Features such as the corners, purfling and soundhole notches follow the Pressenda style but interestingly other details such as pins, sound-hole shape and scroll finishes diverge. The ink stamp to the inside back is seen on other Pacherel instrument from the period and is often stamped with a curved baseline, as seen here, not in a straight line.
