Labeled, "Varagnolo Ferrucio Padovano alunno di Leandro Bisiach fece in Milano l'anno 1914."
LOB: 41.6 cm
Ferrucio Varagnolo was a talented maker from Padua who apprenticed with and worked for Leandro Bisiach in Milan. Unfortunately, he died young after being committed to an asylum.
In the 1950's the Giacomo & Leandro Bisiach firm reprised Varagnolo's name in instruments, particularly violas that were made by Celestino Farotto. Many of these violas were exported to firms in the United States, although it is unclear whether the true maker of these instruments was known at the time. Nonetheless, players highly covet the 1950s 'Varagnolo' violas for their depth of sound and eminent playability.
