97: A VIOLIN BY FERDINANDO GAGLIANO, NAPLES, c. 1770-1780 ‡

Labeled, "Ferdinandus Gagliano Filius Nicolai fecit Neap. 17..."

LOB: 35.0 cm

This violin is a typical example of the work of Ferdinand Gagliano, the eldest son of Nicolo. The maker's distinctive style is evident in the small, neat corners and the center bouts set almost parallel to one another. Typical elements of the Neapolitan school are present, including the narrow fiber purfling and the grouped peg-holes. The maple selected for the back, ribs and head is consistent with the more modest materials frequently often utilized by Neapolitan masters, showing minimal flame. The original varnish is in abundance and well preserved. Gagliano violins are valued by musicians for their excellent playing qualities and practical dimensions.
