Ferdinando Gagliano
Violin maker
(1738 – 1804)
Ferdinando Gagliano, son of Nicola Gagliano, likely trained primarily under his uncle Gennaro. His work exhibited elements from both, characterized by a more restrained craftsmanship, with varnish typically thinner and harder. Notable features include a small tightly-wound scroll and a distinctive downward carving of the upper wing of the treble 'f'. The outline often displayed an awkward transition from the lower bouts to the concave lines of the corners, and some pieces included decorative inlay. An additional label with a religious dedication was commonly affixed to the inner surface of the upper rib, reading Ferdinando Gagliano, me fecit / Neapoli, anno 17.. Ferdinandus Gagliano Filius / Nicolai, Fecit Neap. 17.. While his choice of materials may be uninspired, some of his work reflects exceptional craftsmanship and superior wood.
