Last sold by the London firm Dollin & Sadler in 1966, this violin comes to us from the English violinist, Sydney Mann (pictured). As a student of David Martin, Steven Staryk and Ivan Galamian at the Juilliard School, Sydney made his debut at the Wigmore Hall in London and at Carnegie Recital Hall in New York in 1969. Sydney later changed his family name to that of his grandfather -- Manowitz -- and enjoyed a colourful and decorated career as concertmaster of the CBC Chamber Orchestra, Vancouver, as assistant concertmaster of the National Arts Centre Orchestra in Ottawa, and for 20 years as Concertmaster of the Dunedin Symphony Orchestra in New Zealand.

Sydney played on this Lupot throughout his career, notably as soloist in Max Bruch's concerto, in Vivaldi's Four Seasons, and in premieres of contemporary works by the New Zealand composers Dame Gillian Whitehead, and Anthony Ritchie. Prior to 1966, the violin was played by several other remarkable violinists summarised in the accompanying Dollin & Sadler letter. Notable musicians include Eric Bowie, a player in the London Symphony Orchestra, Isadore (Issay) Shlaen, and Oscar Lampe, the distinguished London-based violinist who led the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra under Sir Thomas Beecham.
