"This viola is a characteristic production of the workshop of Thomas Dodd in London. By 1800, Dodd had a large and influential business trading in classical Italian instruments, and also producing closely observed imitations, generally made for him by employees including Bernhard Simon Fendt and John Lott senior. It is modelled on the Contralto Viola form of Antonio Stradivari, and represents the general interest in Stradivari's work, stimulated by the presence in London in this period of both the virtuoso player Giovanni Battista Viotti and the eminent maker Vincenzo Panormo. This instrument is in an exceptional state of preservation."
