Length of back: 73.4 cm
Notes:
". . .the table of medium grain in the centre opening out slightly towards the flanks and bearing beneath the fingerboard the Arms of the Prince of Wales, later King George VI, and the Prince of Wales' feathers below the tailpiece, the varnish of an orange to red-brown colour, length of back 28 1/2 in. (73.4 cm.), in mahogany case with an oval brass plaque engraved with the Prince of Wales' feathers (2).In The History of the Violin by Sandy & Forster two violoncellos are recorded as having been made in 1782 for the Prince of Wales. However due to "the deficiency in the accounts books" from which this information is gleaned there is no certitude that the present instrument is one of these. Indeed one would have expected some note to have been made in the records indicating the very special nature of this instrument; therefore the reference is probably amongst those records that were lost.
Exhibited in the Galpin Society's 40th Anniversary Exhibition, 1986. See the catalogue Made for Music, No. 9."
