Nicolò Gagliano, Naples, 1749
Violin: 53533
Back: One-piece
Notes:
"We would point out that the dark lines which appear in the photograph just above the chin-rest, are stains in the wood and not fractures. . . . The violin by Nicolo I, used to illustrate this article, has two points of particular interest. Firstly, the sound-holes are cut with a slightly greater slope than is customary with this maker (see the illustration of a violin by Nicolo, dated 1780, given in the July, 1936, issue). Secondly, the scroll of the present example is a much bolder piece of carving than is usually found. In quite a number of this maker's violins the scrolls are poor and of insignificant appearance. Nicolo Gagliano was more successful in the heads of his violoncellos; in some of which the back of the peg box has an aperture cut to facilitate stringing."Violin Makers of the Gagliano Family, The Strad, 1941, London
