The back and ribs are decorated with a gilt insignia and inscriptions. In the center of the back a crest bears the letters, “L. D.” indicating that the instrument was awarded to (Jean Pierre) Léopold Dancla, the brother of Charles and a student of Pierre Baillot. Léopold Dancla won first prize in the Paris Conservatory competition in 1842 and second prize in 1840.
