Nicolò Gagliano, Naples, date unknown
Violin: 53094
Back: Two-piece, ornamented with inlaid purfling
Length of back: 35.5 cm
Upper bouts: 16.5 cm
Lower bouts: 20.6 cm
Notes:
"It is not what might be called a really typical specimen ; for the maker, contrary to his usual custom, has set himself seriously and deliberately to copy Niccolò Amati's grand pattern, label and all, unless the latter has been inserted by another hand. The finish in every detail is quite remarkable, and the head, when one considers the distinctive character of this maker's ordinary scroll, is quite a respectable piece of imitation."Niccolo Gagliano I, Towry Piper, The Strad, 1914, London
