Notes:

"David Bonsey, director of Fine Musical Instruments at Skinner, said: 'There were papers with the violin, supposedly from Hill, but we have been unable to substantiate that. The family story, and that of Vatelot, is that the original papers were destroyed in the First World War.'

Delving deeper brought further surprises. The certificate from Vatelot showed that the scroll was by 'an unknown Venetian maker': this turned out to be Guarneri 'del Gesù.' It was replaced with a Peter Beare scroll three years ago, and the 'del Gesù' is the subject of a separate investigation and sale."
