Gennaro Gagliano, Naples, 1750

Violin: 45322

Labeled, "Antonius Stradivarius Faciebat / Cremonensis Anno 1719."

Back: One-piece of medium irregular curl

Top: of medium grain

Scroll: of narrower figure

Ribs: of wood similar to back

Varnish: Orange-brown

Length of back: 35.9 cm

Notes:

"This instrument is unusual and striking n that it is in completely unaltered condition. It retains its original neck, bass bar and bottom saddle, and probably the original pegs. Only the fingerboard and tail-piece are later additions, and the peg-holes have never been bushed, nor the neck thinned. Moreover, the violin has never been fitted with a chin-rest. Taking all these factors into consideration in addition to the presence of a Stradivari label, it is tempting to speculate that Gagliano himself may have been deliberately deceitful."
