Giovanni Paolo Maggini, Brescia, 1620, the 'Dumas'
Bass: 42148
Back: One-piece
Scroll: Made by W.E. Hill & Sons around 1890
Length of back: 100 cm
Upper bouts: 43.3 cm
Lower bouts: 57.5 cm
Notes:
"Maggini is reputed to have made a considerable number of double basses, and may have done so, but the Dumas bass is the only original one known to Messrs. Hill. It is of very small size, and is what would be called a basso di camera. Its workmanship is poor, the head is not original, and the mitres are not distinctly bevelled ; but on the whole it shows many of the characteristics of Maggini."Gio: Paolo Maggini: His Life and Work, Margaret L.Huggins, Margaret L.Huggins, Gio: Paolo Maggini: His Life & Work, London
