Antonio Stradivari, Cremona, 1731
Violin: 41559
With inscription "d'anni 87."
Back: Two-piece
Varnish: Golden-brown
Notes:
"Of the head, considering it as the work of Antonio, one cannot speak in terms of unqualified admiration. It is undoubtedly original, and betrays no indication of having been cut by either of the maker's sons, whose scrolls, so far at least as my observations go, are inclined to be somewhat massive in design. Here, if anywhere, is some slight indication of waning powers, but the failure seems to me to be more in the design than the execution of the work."A Stradivari Violin, dated 1731, Towry Piper, The Strad, 1912, London
