Top: of medium-grained spruce, straight and even

Ribs: from the same log as the back

Varnish: Reddish

Length of back: 35.7 cm

Upper bouts: 15.6 cm

Middle bouts: 11.4 cm

Notes:

'Supposed to have cost the life of a young Corporal on the guillotine during the French Revolution. A mob, storming a chateau, wanted to destroy the Strad because it was a symbol of aristocracy and wealth, but the young Corporal (violinist at Versailles) snatched the instrument from the ruffians, managed to conceal it, ran five miles with it but was caught and guillotined.' (the violin survived)
