Bartolomeo Giuseppe Guarneri 'del Gesù', Cremona, c. 1732, the 'Dittrich'
Violin: 40218
Labeled, "Joseph Guarnerius fecit Cremonae anno 1736 HIS."
Back: One-piece
Top: possibly later
Length of back: 35.4 cm
Notes:
"A dendochronological analysis of the table of this instrument has revealed that the youngest growth rings on each side date from 1730 and 1731. These dates correlate closely with the fronts of the 'D'Egville', 'Plowden' and 'King Joseph' del Gesus, and would suggest that the front of this instrument was made no earlier than 1736. For an in-depth dendochronological study of the violins of Guarneri del Gesù, see Peter Biddulph, Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesù, Vol.II, pp.159-161."Sotheby's Musical Instruments Auction Catalog, November 14 & 16, 2000, London, Sotheby's, Sotheby's Musical Instruments Auction Catalog, November 14 & 16, 2000, London, London
"Ingles had commissioned dendrochronology expert John Topham for an analysis of the table, which was thought to be by another hand. His results concluded that it was probably later, probably Italian although not necessarily 'del Gesù' work, but I'm not sure the catalogue conveyed this."
