Angelo Soliani
Violin maker
(1752 – c. 1811)
Angelo Soliani, active from the 1770s, was one of the notable 18th-century makers from Modena. His craftsmanship demonstrated a direct knowledge of Cremonese instruments and was reminiscent of G. B. Guadagnini, featuring a style that recalled Guadagnini with a low arch, while some instruments exhibited a narrower pattern with high arches. Soliani used fine materials and applied a distinctive golden-orange varnish. His work was characterized by a small, attractive scroll and delicate purling, and each instrument was branded internally with a 'shining sun' motif.
