Alessandro Mezzadri
Violin maker
(fl. 1690 – 1740)
Alessandro Mezzadri was a musician and violin maker, recognized as the founder of the Ferrara school of violin making. His style was individual and loosely modeled on the Amati, though it varied, with some instruments also reflecting Maggini influences. The arch of his violins was generally of medium height, and while the workmanship was not highly finished or accurate, it possessed great charm. He crafted a finely rounded volute with a small eye, albeit cut hastily. The varnish was richly textured and deeply colored, ranging from golden to rich orange-brown, but had a thin consistency. His stylish instruments are rare, with some showcasing an astonishingly high quality of work and materials
