Dezsö Bárány
Violin maker
(1871 – 1942)
Dezsö Bárány, regarded as one of the most talented pupils of Pilat, worked in Vienna for T. Zach and J. Hamberger, in Berlin for K. Ferenczy-Tomassovszky, and in Budapest with Tanczer, Lutz, Pilat, Remenyi, and Magyorossy. He served as workshop foreman for Pilat and developed a system for aging varnish. In 1920, he established a workshop named Demo Barany & Co, sponsored by American art dealer F. Chaminer, which employed around 20 craftsmen and produced close copies of minor 18th-century Italian instruments, as well as works by Guarneri and Stradivari. Although the shop closed in 1925, he continued to create copies for export and received a gold medal in 1926 for his copy of the Stradivari 'Flubay' violin. He gained a reputation as the finest Hungarian maker of the 20th century, with labels affixed to his copies indicating Keszitette / Barany Derso / Budapest 19.
