One of the best and most important 17th century Dutch makers, Hendrik Jacobs was rumored to have spent time in Italy, but it is more likely that his knowledge of the Italian tradition came from instruments circulating in the Netherlands during this period. His early work, which dates from roughly 1650 to 1670, follows Amati very ...Read More closely, with slightly wide f-holes. Over the next 15 years or so Jacobs' style becomes more striking and personal, and finally around 1685 the hand of Jacobs' stepson Peter Rombouts is in evidence until Jacobs' death in 1699. His instruments possess fine craftsmanship, with exceptional varnish, but in general his conception of Amati is more exaggerated than literal and would not be mistaken for the genuine article. The Amati labels his instruments sometimes bear was probably intended as an homage rather than deceit. Though Jacobs died in 1704, some instruments bear original engraved labels dated after this date which are understood to be the work of Rombouts continuing the workshop of his stepfather. Read Less
