Tomasz Panufnik
Violin maker
–
Tomasz Panufnik trained as a hydro-engineer. He was active as a violin maker in Warsaw from 1903 to 1925 and was regarded as the best Polish maker of the 20th century. He planned a large commercial establishment, the Panufnik Musical Instruments Factory, which lasted only one year. He was the father of Andrzej Panufnik, the composer. His work received endorsements from many leading European virtuosi. He made instruments in two distinct models: 'Antica' and 'Polonia. ' The 'Antica' was based on classical Italian designs, while the 'Polonia' featured an original model with a finely carved female head in place of the scroll. All patterns were derived from Stradivari; the work was very sophisticated, although it had slightly exaggerated features. The varnish was dark red-brown and crackled. The instruments had large open Ts, short wings, unfluted edges, and large finials. They featured a low arch, were full to the edge, and had short corners. The locks were made of pine and not morticed. He was the author of Technologia Lutnicza (Warsaw 1934). The inscriptions included "Thomas Panufnik / Fecit anno 1914 / F. B / VIL Tom. Panufnik" and "Thomas Panufnik/ 25/IX/ fecit anno 1928. ".
