Giovanni Battista Rugeri, born in 1653, was the eldest of Francesco Rugeri's ten children — the first child of his 1652 marriage — and one of the four sons his father named as working violin makers in his own will. He married in 1687 and moved within Cremona to the parish of S. Nazaro, then in 1693 moved back outside the city walls to S. Bernardo, likely continuing to work alongside his father ...Read More through this period; very few instruments survive under his own label from these years, though one dated 1689 shows workmanship close enough to a labelled Francesco Rugeri instrument that modern researchers consider them the work of the same hand — strong evidence he was making instruments in his father's own workshop and style, only occasionally signing them himself.

In 1698, the year his father died, Giovanni Battista moved once more, to San Luca — close enough to his younger brother Vincenzo's own independent workshop that he most likely went to work there. Modern research (Chiesa, 2014) states that he did in fact join Vincenzo's shop, after the births of Vincenzo's own two sons, Francesco II and Carlo Giuseppe. He died in 1717. Read Less
