Giovanni Battista Grancino II
Violin maker
(1673 – c. after 1723)
Son of leading 17th-century Milanese violin maker Giovanni Grancino, Giovanni Battista assisted his father in his successful workshop on the Contrada Larga, and was probably responsible for much of its output by the end of the century. Sadly a quarrel with rival violin maker Antonio Maria Lavazza resulted in the fatal stabbing of Lavazza, after which Giovanna Battista was sentenced to death in 1708. He escaped execution by going into hiding and was eventually pardoned, but by then the family workshop had been sold and his reputation was ruined. Although he probably continued to work during his period in hiding, the quality of his work declined and his labels are extremely rare after 1708.
