Juan Guillami I
Violin maker
(c. 1699 – 1767)
One of the best Spanish violin makers, especially in workmanship and style, was Joan Guillamí of Barcelona. He worked from 1721 to 1767 in his own shop, building instruments whose construction is heavily inspired by Stradivari. The varnish and heads, though rather stout in profile, also resemble Stradivari's work, but the arching is more full. In general Guillaumí's violins possess beauty of tone with little power, perhaps because of the density of the wood used for the tops. His cellos, which are based on Stradivari's larger pattern and have since been cut down, are also of excellent materials and workmanship. Guillaumí's output also included double basses. Instruments are often branded GVILLAMI near the soundpost.
