Jean Baptiste Lefèbvre I
Violin maker
(c. 1700 – 1772)
Jean Baptiste Lefèbvre was active in Amsterdam from around 1726. He worked in two distinct styles: one followed the traditional Dutch manner, featuring the Arnatisé model with long corners and whalebone purfling; the other was more aligned with the Mirecourt tradition, characterized by low arches and short corners, using yellow and golden-brown varnish. His instruments generally had small scrolls and short soundholes. He received assistance from his son, Jean Baptiste Lefèbvre (II). The workshop located in Kalverstraat continued under the management of various luthiers until 1857, and the business was carried into the 20th century by the Ko brothers and Johannes Peereboom. J. B. LeFèbvre fecit in Amsterdam, 1770.
