Pietro Paolo De Vitor
                                    Violin maker
                                    (b. c. 1720)

Pietro Paolo De Vitor was of Venetian origin according to his label. His work was rarely encountered, but it featured striking form and workmanship, representing an interesting blend of early Brescian and later Rogeri styles. It is possible that he had some contact with Pietro Giacomo Rogeri. The full arch followed the Brescian manner but was evenly regulated. Soundholes were long, gracefully cut, and well set, with long outward pointing corners. The scroll was finely carved, displaying very distinctively cut flutings, somewhat reminiscent of Rogeri, where the outer edge, although well-defined, was very slight, and the fluting increased in depth toward the sharply raised central ridge. The varnish was a fine deep orange-brown.
