Born in Asti in the mid 18th century, Giovanni Maria Valenzano was perhaps the most itinerant violin maker in Italian history. According to his labels, over the course of his career Valenzano worked in at least seven cities in three different countries, and he allegedly made keyboard instruments of all kinds in addition to guitars and violins. Valenzano's nomadic tendencies and wide-ranging professional pursuits have made him a challenging figure for experts to pin down, and the style of his work is as varied as his personal history.
