Raffaele & Antonio Gagliano
Violin maker
(fl. 1770 – 1857)
Sons of Giovanni and business partners. Their violins are mainly of commercial quality, some with broad and ugly f-holes, indifferently varnished, some with double purfling, others with none. Later they largely gave up making instruments and turned to producing gut strings, eventually presiding over one of the largest businesses in Italy. Some violins are dated as late as 1857.
Antonio made a few instruments labeled with his name only, which are greatly superior to those that bear the brothers' joint label. Raffaele apparently made no instruments bearing his name alone.
