Gilles Nehr was born in the south west region of France. He started studying bow-making at the age of 17 with his cousin, Jean-Pascal Nehr, in Marseille, and graduated from Mirecourt at age 20. He then worked with Stéphane Muller in Toulouse and René Morel in New York.
Gilles opened his own workshop in Manhattan in 1999, where he invented his celebrated tête-bêche design, to offer a stronger and more practical alternative to classical models.
He returned to Europe and opened workshops in Lisbon (2002-2004), in Rome, in Berlin and in Bordeaux, where he currently lives.
Gilles has won a Certificate of Merit for Craftsmanship from the BVMA.
