Antoine Despont
Violin maker
(fl. 1634 – 1669)
Antoine Despont worked as a 'Maitre d'instruments de musique' at the sign of 'The Royal Lute'. Authentic instruments were very rare, and according to Vannes, he had been a victim of much falsification and misrepresentation. He was held in good regard during his time, but the poor work that was later attributed to his labels tended to diminish his reputation. For instance, Henley provided a highly critical description of a coarse instrument characterized by 'slip-shod' workmanship.
