Gaetano Antoniazzi
Violin maker
(1825 – 1897)
Gaetano Antoniazzi, born in 1825, was one of the last of the late Cremonese violin makers. He probably studied with the Ceruti family and after numerous moves in 1870 he settled in Milan, where he perpetuated the Cremonese traditions that helped inspire the modern Milanese school. Antoniazzi's work shows genuine and bold creativity, although some example show more care than others. Varnish is often a yellowish- or reddish-brown, and labels are usually handwritten. Gaetano and his sons Riccardo and Romeo all worked for Leandro Bisiach, Gaetano until about 1890.
