Michèle Ashley is an American violin maker best known for her cellos. Raised in the United States and educated partly in France, she studied cello and ethnomusicology before entering the International School of Violin Making in Cremona at the age of 19. There she trained with Giovanni Battista Morassi and Pietro Sgarabotto, graduating in 1975.

Ashley subsequently worked near Parma and in ...Read More Verona, where she studied briefly with Renato Scrollavezza, before joining Mario Gadda’s workshop in Mantua. She later established her own workshop in Boston and, from 2004, also worked in Montreal. Although she has made violins and violas, her reputation rests principally on her cellos, which are often based on classical Italian models by Montagnana, Amati, Goffriller, Stradivari and Guadagnini.
