Nathaniel Cross
Violin maker
(1686 – 1751)
Son of an engraver, Nathaniel Cross took up violin
making in the early 1700s and was associated with Barak Norman, though it is not known if Norman taught him. There is evidence of collaboration between the two makers, but after Norman's death in 1724 Cross began to take on his own assistants, including Alexander Kennedy, great-uncle of Thomas Kennedy. His output was considerable, mostly high-quality Stainer copies, which became popular in London due in no small part to his influence. Many examples bear the brand "N.C." to the button.
