Giuseppe Dall'Aglio
Violin maker
(1774 – 1855)
Like many makers of the early 19th-century Mantuan school, Giuseppe Dall'Aglio was heavily inspired by the work of Pietro Guarneri, who lived in Mantua from 1680 until 1720. He generally used a rather large model with moderate arching and chose high-quality materials. Backs are often of finely grained maple and varnish is of a yellowish brown color. His workmanship is often rough, but individual examples excel in beauty and sound quality.
He married the sister of Sante Coppi in 1807 and the two makers lived and worked in close proximity from around 1815 until the 1830s.
