William Smith established his workshop at Sycamore Street, Sheffield. One known cello is a Walmsley model featuring fine golden-brown soft textured varnish. It was embellished with a 'Sheraton' style circular shell motif inlaid in the center of the back between the upper corners and beneath the fingerboard, along with a similar 'shell' in an oval frame in the middle bouts of the back. There were prickmarks around the volutes of the scroll and purfling inlaid in the sides of the pegbox.
