Robert Duncan
(fl. 1739 – 1760)
Robert Duncan was the most significant maker of the Aberdeen school. His work, very refined and based on the Stainer model, was comparable to contemporary Florentine craftsmanship. The craftsmanship was precise, featuring delicate and accurate chamfers and edges. The purfling was typically painted on, yet with remarkable precision. It is highly likely that he received some professional training in London, possibly with Wamsley, as the technical aspects of his work were very accomplished. The scroll was cut with a distinctive conical taper to the volutes, which could be viewed from both the front and back, and had an extended last turn. He used a thin golden-brown varnish. Aberdeen, 1775.
