Cataloger (New York)

Position: Cataloger
Reports to: General Manager
Location: 244 W. 54th St, New York, NY (on-site)
Salary: $50,000 – $55,000 per annum commensurate with experience
Hours: 10am-6pm Monday-Friday (occasional evening/weekend hours)

Job Role

The Cataloger role is fast-paced and revolves around the examination of rare and antique instruments and bows. This position is ideal for somebody with experience in an auction setting who excels at multitasking. Core tasks will include initial condition checks of property arriving to Tarisio, detailed cataloging, dendrochronology, diagnostic infrared photography to support condition reports, and answering property-specific bidder inquiries. The Cataloger is an integral part of the team and the best candidate for this role is one who can operate enthusiastically in a team environment. 

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Cataloging: accurately describe the item’s features, supply measurements, and transcribe labels
  • Condition reporting: evaluate and document the physical state of the item
  • Prepare instruments for photography
  • Initiate dendrochronology assessments and log results
  • Take infrared photos
  • Add properties to archives
  • Assign makers and dates to instrument records
  • Support bidder enquiries
  • Provide front of house support
  • Traveling as needed

Required Skills

  • Experience as a cataloger or registrar preferred 
  • Detail oriented
  • Past handling of fine objects
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to multitask
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to manage time effectively and work in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong teamwork mindset, paired with an ability to work independently
  • A love of music and desire to work within a creative environment

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent
  • Experience in auction, museum, gallery, or arts administration is a plus
  • Familiarity with classical music or musical instruments (particularly violins) is preferred
  • Must be able to work with our computer systems, CRM GSuite, and email
  • Must be able to legally work in the United States, OPT Visas not accepted
  • Ability to work in-office five days per week
