This violin is a particularly fine and characteristic example of the work of Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume, made around 1845. It is covered in a rich, deep reddish-brown varnish and displays the distinctive antiquing for which Vuillaume’s work is so immediately recognizable.

Vuillaume worked principally from two great Cremonese models: Stradivari and Guarneri del Gesù. This violin follows the Stradivari model, prized by players for its immediate familiarity under the hand, balanced proportions, and broad versatility. With its strong, well-rounded playing qualities, it would make an excellent choice for a professional musician seeking an instrument capable both of blending naturally in ensemble playing and projecting with authority in a concert hall.
