117: A VIOLIN BY STEFANO SCARAMPELLA, c. 1910

Labeled, "... Scarampella Firenze..."

Rosewood nigra pegs.

LOB: 36.0 cm

A highly interesting and well-preserved example of Stefano Scarampella’s work, this violin was made around 1910 and is a particularly attractive specimen by one of the most revered and sought-after Italian makers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

The violin retains a generous coat of orange-brown varnish characteristic of Scarampella’s work from this period. Like many of his instruments of these years, it draws strongly on the work of Guarneri del Gesù, a model that has long appealed to musicians both visually and tonally.

The violin bears its original manuscript label, which clearly gives Florence as the place of manufacture. Although Scarampella is not generally associated with working there, his brother Giuseppe Scarampella lived and worked in Florence, which raises the possibility that this violin was in fact made during a period spent there.
