28: A VIOLA BY PIER ANGELO BALZARINI, CREMONA, 1999

Labeled, "Pier Angelo Balzarini fece in Cremona Anno 1999."

Branded to the inside back, to the upper and lower block and twice to the inside top, "BPA."

LOB: 42.1 cm

This viola was made in 1999 by Pier Angelo Balzarini, who trained at the International School of Violin Making in Cremona under makers including Pistoni, Zambelli, and Bulfari. The quality of that training is reflected in Balzarini’s prize-winning work, recognized in Cremona in 1985 and 1988 and in Poznań in 1987. Balzarini died at a comparatively young age, and his output was consistently of a high standard; as a result, his instruments are relatively scarce and have become highly sought after.

The viola remains in near-perfect condition and retains plentiful orange-red varnish with the tasteful craquelure, characteristic of the maker’s work. The two-piece maple back is cut with a strong, handsome flame descending from the treble side.
  • Proforma Certificate: Jason Price, New York, NY (Sep 16 2026)
  • Dendrochronology report: Sondre Lie, Oslo (Aug 18 2026) Dates the latest ring of the bass and treble side as 1972 and 1978, respectively.
  • Certificate: Stam & zn, Utrecht (Sep 15 2005)
